Cyprus is a family-friendly destination with excellent food to satisfy even the fussiest of eaters and a broad range of attractions that appeal to adults and children alike, as well as superb beaches. Visiting as a family does require some planning, but no more than for any other European country.
The culture revolves around the (extended) family and children are adored. Stripped back to basics, beaches, castles, ancient sights and virtual year-round sunshine are pretty good raw ingredients. Add to this water sports, museums, parks, boat rides and loads of ice cream and it becomes serious spoil-them-rotten time. Note that the majority of theme parks and human-made entertainment for children is in the Republic.
Cyprus is an almost perfect holiday for families. Small enough to get around easily but densely packed with history, myth, legend and the fascinating influences of the many cultures who’ve called this lovely place home at one time or another

From the magnificent Balkan Mountains to its sunny Black Sea coast, Bulgaria doesn’t put a foot wrong for family holidays. Gorgeous seaside resorts in summer are matched by Europe’s lowest cost skiing from December to April. Choose pretty Plovdiv for an urban break with festivals, ancient history and breathtaking architecture and then drop in on Sofia too – both cities are less than two hours apart. Or head for the hills and pick from an unfair number of Bulgarian ranges where everything from mineral spas to extreme mountain biking are part of the adventure.
The vast majority of visitors remain on the Black Sea Coast, visiting other coastal towns and resorts. Varna, Bulgaria’s third city is the most interesting of the big urbanizations on the shore, with an old-fashioned elegance and promenades leading down through parkland to the sea. It’s worth hunting out its Roman baths and excellent archaeological museum, which helps make sense of the region’s historical background. The city has its own beach, and though it is not especially clean thanks to the proximity of the port, the shanty-town of clubs and bars is lively. A shuttle bus runs between Golden Sands (see below) and the centre.
